How to Disconnect a Car Battery

When you notice that your vehicle is taking too long to crank up or the lights are flickering instead of beaming, you may have to change your battery. If you bought a new car battery yourself and you want to do it from home, use the following steps to successfully disconnect your vehicle’s battery:

  • Loosen the negative gage’s nut with a wrench
  • Then remove the negative conductor
  • You’ll do the same for the positive side
  • The battery should come out after the conductors have been removed

How to Install a New Car Battery

When our Cookeville-area customers ask us how to disconnect and install a car battery, we tell them, before getting at it, you have to clean the battery holding location from any residue discharged by the battery. Usually degreaser and baking soda with water helps. Also, clean the battery conductors with a wire brush. Once you have this done, do the following:

  •  Put the new battery in the holding location
  • Spray the gages with anti-corrosion fluid
  • Attach the negative (blue or black) and positive (red) cables onto the right terminals, and tighten them.
